This series explores the subtle moments and rarely photographed connections that form the base of life. What kind of a line translates the kindness of strangers? How can we see excitement, someone on tip toe, tickles? What do sounds like Oops and Shhh look like? 

I painted this series on a rich variety of paper: handmade Awagami Yoshido washi paper, Hahnemühle bamboo paper, handmade Fabriano paper, Awagami Kitakata paper — papers in all shades of white, blues, yellows, and greens.

Those who know my work will recognise familiar themes — minimal lines capturing states of being and connections, the body as our universal mother tongue. 

This series was influenced by a book on shosa by Ringo Gomez-Jorge and Rob Walkers, which portrays craftspeople and mindful ways of moving in Japanese culture, as well as by time spent with children who draw attention to details, inspiring curiosity and humour.
